Chairman - Roberto V. Ongpin has had a remarkable career in the private and the public sectors. A graduate of Ateneo de Manila University and Harvard Business School, he worked in the US, then joined SyCip Gorres Velayo (SGV) & Co. becoming Managing Partner of that firm before he was 30. He served as the Philippines Minister of Trade and Industry from 1979 to 1986, after which he set up a financial advisory firm, AIA Capital. He brought the Kuok family's Shangri-La group to the Philippines, and conceptualized and developed Tagaytay Highlands. He is chairman of PhilWeb Corp, ISM Communications Corp., Developing Countries Investment Corporation, Eastern Telecommunications Philippines, Inc., Deputy Chairman of the South China Morning Post of Hong Kong, director of Shangri-La Asia (Hongkong), Araneta Properties, Inc., San Miguel Corporation and Petron Corporation.
Vice Chairman - Eric O. Recto holds a degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of the Philippines and an MBA from Johnson School at Cornell University. He was the CFO of Belle Corporation during the development of Tagaytay Highlands, and later of Alaska Milk Corporation. He served as Undersecretary of the Department of Finance for the Philippine Government in charge of handling both the International Finance Group and the Privatization Office. He is president of Petron Corporation, ISM Communications Corp., vice chairman of PhilWeb Corp. He is also an independent director of the Philippine National Bank, PNOC Energy Development Corporation, Metro Pacific Investment Corporation, and of Maynilad Water Services, Inc.
President - Mario A. Oreta is a lawyer by profession, and graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University. He was managing partner of the law firm Tanjuatco, Oreta and Factoran, with expertise in corporate and real estate transactions. He incorporated Major Properties, an integral part of the Major Holdings Group whose pioneering work in building and construction includes many prestigious landmarks Tagaytay Highlands Golf and Country Club, Sta. Elena Golf and Country Club, and Caylabne Bay (formerly Marbella) Resort. He is Chairman of the Major Holdings Group, Constant Builders and Development Corp., Major Homes, Inc. and Major Properties, Inc. He also sits as Director of Toyota Pasong Tamo, Inc., Philweb Corporation and ISM Communications.
The Ashmore Group is one of the world's leading investment managers dedicated to emerging markets with a history of consistently outperforming the market. Based in London, the business was started by members of its team in 1992 as part of the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group. In 1999, Ashmore became independent and today manages US$31.1 billion (at 30 Sept 2009) in pooled funds, segregated accounts and structured products. Ashmore has made extensive investments in the Philippines in close partnership with Roberto V. Ongpin. It has holdings in PhilWeb and ISM Communications, and a 40% stake in the country's largest oil refiner and retailer, Petron Corporation.
